Every year on December 8, Bodhi Day is observed across the world, though the day is known by different names in different cultures. Celebrated to honor Gautama Buddha and his teachings, Bodhi Day marks the eighth day of the twelfth month of the traditional lunisolar calendar.
Gautama Buddha was a spiritual teacher whose profound insights laid the foundation of Buddhism. He is also known as Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni, and simply the Buddha. The word Buddha means the awakened one or the enlightened one.
Bodhi Day commemorates the moment when Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya more than 2,500 years ago, transforming from a seeker into the Buddha.
Legend says that at the age of 29, Siddhartha renounced the luxuries of palace life and began a journey of deep meditation and self-discovery in search of the true meaning of life. After years of intense spiritual practice, he finally attained enlightenment—an event remembered and revered as Bodhi Day.
