World Book and Copyright Day – A Global Celebration of Reading
Books are more than just printed words—they are windows into new worlds, introducing us to diverse people, cultures, and ideas. Every year on April 23, UNESCO celebrates World Book and Copyright Day to honor the unique power of books to connect generations and bridge cultural divides.
The date holds deep literary significance, marking the deaths of literary icons such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
The idea for World Book Day originated from Spanish author Vicente Clavel Andrés, who wished to honor Miguel de Cervantes. Since then, the day has grown into a powerful global movement championing the lifelong love of reading.
The theme for 2025 is:
"Read Your Way: Diverse Books for Every Mind"
This year’s theme highlights the need for inclusion and diversity in literature. It encourages readers to discover a wide range of voices, perspectives, and cultures through books—helping to foster empathy, understanding, and a stronger global connection.
Books educate, inform, and entertain. But to truly unlock their potential, they must reflect the linguistic diversity of our world.
