Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Honouring 26 Years of Bravery and Sacrifice
As India prepares to mark the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, 2025, the Indian Army has launched a series of commemorative events to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of its soldiers during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
Remembering Operation Vijay
The Indian Army has begun sharing poignant moments from Operation Vijay, the military campaign that led to India’s decisive victory in the high-altitude conflict with Pakistan in 1999. Between May and July 1999, Indian forces successfully reclaimed key peaks such as Tiger Hill, driving out Pakistani infiltrators who had occupied strategic posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir.
In a post on platform X, the Army stated:
“Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: 30 Days to Go… 30 Days to Remember
A tribute to the unmatched valour of our bravehearts.
Their courage echoes through the heights of Kargil, forever etched in the soul of India.”
A National Outreach: Honouring the Fallen Heroes
In a deeply personal initiative, the Army is reaching out to the families of all 545 martyrs who laid down their lives during the conflict. This outreach covers households in 25 states, 2 Union Territories, and Nepal, where Army officers are:
-
Delivering letters of gratitude
-
Presenting commemorative mementoes
-
Sharing detailed information on welfare schemes
-
Gathering feedback on any unresolved issues faced by families
One such moving tribute included a visit to the parents of Captain Vijayant Thapar, who was martyred in the conflict. Army personnel visited their home in Noida and presented a special memento.
Preserving History at Kargil War Memorial
As part of preserving the legacy of the war heroes, the Army is also collecting personal memorabilia—photos, letters, uniforms—from the families of martyrs. These will be curated and preserved at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh.
