Library of Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College Sangli     May 12, 2025     No comments

International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on May 12 to honor the invaluable contributions of nurses to healthcare systems around the world. The date  marks  the birthday of   Florence Nightingale,  the  founder of modern nursing, who is widely regarded for her pioneering work in hospital sanitation, public health, and nursing education.

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, providing compassionate care, patient advocacy, and critical medical support in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. International Nurses Day highlights the importance of their work in improving patient outcomes, promoting health, and ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities.

Each year, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) chooses a theme for the day to focus on specific issues and challenges within the nursing profession. The theme emphasizes the role of nurses in healthcare delivery, education, and policy development, while also addressing concerns related to nurse welfare and working conditions.

The theme for International Nurses Day 2025 is "Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies". This theme emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the well-being of nurses, recognizing that a healthy and supported nursing workforce is crucial for strong healthcare systems and economic growth

Library of Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College Sangli     May 12, 2025     No comments

Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak, is one of the most significant festivals in the Buddhist tradition. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This auspicious day is celebrated on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month, which usually falls in April or May, depending on the lunar calendar. In 2025, Buddha Purnima will be observed on May 12.

Significance of Buddha Purnima:

Buddha Purnima holds immense spiritual importance for Buddhists and is a day of reflection, meditation, and reverence. The three key events in the life of Lord Buddha—his birth, enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and his passing into Parinirvana—are celebrated on this day, symbolizing the path to enlightenment and the ultimate truth.

  1. Birth: Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, Nepal, around 563 BCE.

  2. Enlightenment: Siddhartha attained nirvana (enlightenment) at the age of 35 while meditating under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.

  3. Death (Parinirvana): Buddha passed away at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, India, after having shared his wisdom with his disciples.

Buddha’s Teachings:

Buddha’s core teachings of non-violence (Ahimsa), compassion, and the pursuit of inner peace resonate with people worldwide, making Buddha Purnima a day of spiritual reflection for followers of all religions. It encourages individuals to lead lives filled with kindness, tolerance, and mindfulness.

Library of Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College Sangli     May 11, 2025     No comments

National Technology Day – India

National Technology Day is observed in India every year on May 11 to commemorate the nation’s technological achievements, especially in the field of science and innovation. The day marks a significant milestone in India’s history — the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

These tests, known as Operation Shakti, demonstrated India’s scientific and technological advancement and established it as a nuclear power. The day also celebrates other major achievements in aerospace, defense, and engineering, including the successful test flight of Hansa-3, India’s first indigenous aircraft, and advancements in missile technology under the leadership of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Declared by the Government of India in 1999, National Technology Day recognizes the contributions of scientists, engineers, researchers, and technologists in the growth and development of the country.

Significance:

  • Honors Indian scientists and engineers for their innovation.

  • Encourages youth to pursue careers in science and technology.

  • Highlights the role of technology in national progress and self-reliance.

Maharana Pratap Jayanti

Maharana Pratap Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap, one of the greatest and most valiant Rajput warriors in Indian history. He was born on May 9, 1540, in Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan, and belonged to the Sisodia dynasty of Mewar.

Maharana Pratap is remembered for his unyielding resistance against the Mughal Empire, especially his legendary battle against Emperor Akbar at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he refused to bow to Mughal dominance and continued to fight for the independence of Mewar throughout his life.

His courage, leadership, and deep sense of honor made him a symbol of Rajput pride and valor. Maharana Pratap’s loyal horse Chetak, who fought bravely alongside him, is also celebrated for his loyalty and bravery.

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is observed mainly in Rajasthan and other northern states of India, with cultural programs, processions, and tributes at memorials. People honor his legacy by remembering his heroic deeds and commitment to freedom and dignity.
