Celebrated every year on 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the vital role of science in society and emphasizes the need to engage the public in discussions about emerging scientific issues. It underlines how science is deeply woven into our daily lives and essential for shaping a sustainable future.
By linking science more closely with society, this day ensures that citizens are informed about scientific advances and understand their relevance to global and local challenges. It also recognizes the invaluable role of scientists in expanding our understanding of the remarkable yet fragile planet we call home and in helping to make our societies more resilient and sustainable.
The 2025 theme calls for building trust in science, fostering transformative change, and envisioning the future of scientific progress toward the year 2050.
In line with the United Nations General Assembly’s proclamation of 2024–2033 as the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, this year’s celebration invites reflection on the kind of science—and relationship between science and society— needed to meet the complex demands of the coming decades.
As highlighted by Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, UNESCO’s Special Envoy, World Science Day 2025 reminds us that science must remain inclusive, transparent, and oriented toward peace and development for the benefit of all humanity.
