Purpose: To raise awareness about leprosy (Hansen’s disease), celebrate individuals affected by it, and eliminate the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
Theme for 2025: "Unite. Act. Eliminate."
This year’s theme is a call to action emphasizing the need for global collaboration, proactive measures, and a strong commitment to eradicating leprosy.
Global Commitment ("Unite")
- Eradicating leprosy requires joint efforts from governments, healthcare providers, NGOs, communities, and individuals.
- Advocacy and awareness campaigns can help fight misinformation and reduce discrimination.
Immediate Action ("Act")
- Public education and early diagnosis programs can help detect and treat cases before they lead to complications.
- Prevention measures, Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) treatment, and rehabilitation support are essential.
- Empowering persons affected by leprosy through social inclusion and economic opportunities.
A Clear Goal ("Eliminate Leprosy")
- The World Health Organization (WHO) aims to eliminate leprosy as a public health problem.
- Continued investment in diagnostics, innovative treatments, and outreach programs is necessary to achieve global elimination.
World Leprosy Day 2025 reminds us that eliminating leprosy is possible through unity, action, and sustained commitment. Together, we can ensure a leprosy-free future where no one suffers from the disease or its stigma.
